A friendly classroom bet with a teacher has prompted a high schooler to finish his secondary education with 100 per cent attendance.
In five years of schooling, 17-year-old Ben Standring did not miss a single day at Wellington Point State High School.
The 2021 graduate said his ambition to prove his teacher wrong led to the rare achievement.
"In year seven I told my welfare class teacher, Mr Diete, that I was never going to miss a day of school, and he asked if I was willing to make a bet because he didn't believe I could do it," Mr Standring said.
"I just wanted to show him that I could."
Mr Standring's teacher rewarded the keen runner with a pair of Nike Pegasus shoes at the end of the year.
"It felt pretty amazing, especially when Mr Diete gave me the shoes," he said.
"It felt so good to have accomplished that."
The star pupil won several awards in his final year, both inside and outside of the classroom.
He was awarded the principal award, and academic honours after topping his class in general maths and physical education, his favorite subjects.
"It's not something I really set out to do, I just really enjoyed those subjects and so I put a lot of time and effort into them," Mr Standring said.
He also won awards for his sporting achievements in touch football and athletics, including athletics age champion, the 2021 contribution to sport and the Olympic game changer award.
With big plans for the future, Mr Standring hopes to study a bachelor of psychology at Griffith University next year, and will train with an extended Mal Meninga squad for rugby league.
