Rankin MP Jim Chalmers has been named Australia's new treasurer, after being sworn in to the interim ministry alongside colleagues Richard Marles, Penny Wong and Katy Gallagher.
Dr Chalmers celebrated his appointment as the 41st Treasurer of Australia on Twitter, calling the opportunity "an honour".
A Logan resident, Dr Chalmers held the Shadow Treasurer portfolio since 2019 and promised to remember his local community when he declared victory in his seat on election night.
"I won't consider myself the Treasurer who happens to come from Logan," he said.
"I will always consider myself a Logan kid who happens to be the Treasurer."
All ministerial portfolios will be shared between Dr Chalmers and his colleagues until the 47th Parliament of Australia is officially sworn in and a new cabinet is selected, but the primary responsibilities of the interim cabinet are as follows:
- Mr Marles: Employment Minister and Deputy Prime Minister
- Senator Gallagher: Finance Minister
- Senator Wong: Foreign Minister
Anthony Albanese was also sworn in as the country's 31st Prime Minister prior to attending a meeting of Quad leaders in Tokyo alongside Senator Wong.
