REDLAND City Council has paid $3.4 million for a second key parcel of land at Toondah Harbour for redevelopment of the ferry terminal.
The 19,888sq m parcel includes the former CSIRO site and covers six allotments all zoned for marine activity (SubArea MA1).
It is expected the building will be used to house Redland Water and Waste staff in the short term.
The building classification allows for continued administration use at the site, near the 7120sq m of foreshore land the council bought from CSIRO in late 2010 for $3.495 million.
Redland City Mayor Melva Hobson said the purchase gave council control over 90 per cent of the land at Toondah Harbour, some of which was owned by the state government with council acting as trustee.
Cr Hobson said the land would ensure the terminal was developed without disadvantaging the community.
She said the council would ask Premier Campbell Newman to take a lead role coordinating the harbour's redevelopment.
Cr Craig Ogilvie (Div 2) said improved parking, retail, tourism and service facilities at the terminal were vital for North Stradbroke Island's prosperity.
