David Russell was the quickest in practice in the Porsche Carrera Cup series and recorded the second fastest time of the first session in the V8 Supercars practice at the Gold Coast 600 on Friday.
The 32-year-old Birkdale racing driver is partnering Rick Kelly in the Jack Daniel's Nissan Altima and is driving the JBS Porsche in the Carrera Cup series this weekend.
The cars hit the track for practice on Friday morning with V8 Supercar drivers and their co drivers taking to the streets of Surfers Paradise in separate sessions.
Russell was in top form on opening day, recording a 1:11.76 in the Nissan, just 0.1973 sec behind the early co-driver pacesetter Steven Richards in the Red Bull 888 Holden Commodore.
It was quite good, the car rolled out of the truck very very well," David Russell said.
"I felt quite comfortable in the car straight away, and its all about getting a feel for the circuit and a feel for the balance of the car.
"It was good to get straight into it, and it was good to be P2 in the first session, I was pretty happy with that.
"The second session we opted to do more of a race run, where we stayed on some older tyres and did some longer stints.
"Obviously the pace wasn't there like the session before, but it was good to see how the soft tyre lasts over a race stint," David said.
In the Porsche, Russell notched up a 1:13.36, 0.2745 behind Warren Luff in the early practice session.
In the second V8 Supercars practice, Russell was penalised with a two-minute stint in the pits for overuse of the kerbs in the chicanes. He finished 12th on the list for the practice session.
