A 25-year-old woman and her three-year-old son escaped a fire in a Mount Cotton house when a television burst into flames on Friday morning.
The pair were taken to Logan Hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.
The woman tried to smother the fire with a blanket but the TV then exploded.
Fire investigation teams are still trying to determine why the TV exploded.
Chief Fire Officer from Redland Bay Ken Sweet said it was too early to rule out the side effects of an electrical and hail storm that blew across the area the night before.
But he said a fire alarm and the woman's swift actions helped firies save a section of the Coolaman Court house.
When dealing with electrical fires, he warned people to "immediately turn off power at the mains" and never use water.
"We managed to save the rest of the house and the neighbouring property, which is very close and just over a metre away," he said.
Chief officer Sweet said every house should have a fire blanket and a fire extinguisher and kids should know how to use the extinguisher.
The fire broke out at the front of the rented, two-bedroom, one-storey brick house just after 10.15am.
