The political race for the state seat of Redlands heated up today after the sister of incumbent LNP member Peter Dowling announced she would run as an independent candidate.
Sheena Hewlett threw her hat into the ring after husband, Redland City councillor Lance Hewlett lost his bid for the seat to Matt McEachan today.
Ms Hewlett will resign as the Redlands LNP branch secretary and treasurer along with her husband Cr Hewlett who will resign as branch president.
Today's decision by Ms Hewlett follows this morning's announcement by Premier Campbell Newman that he had always supported Mr Dowling, despite opposition from the party executive.
Ms Hewlett said she has been on the campaign front for over 15 years and grew up with a mother who inspired brother Peter Dowling MP Redlands.
" Anyone who knows me knows I am highly motivated and have successfully overseen, and won seven State and Council elections, now it's my turn," she said.
"I have taught in and around the Redlands for over 20 years and have lived in Victoria Pt with my husband for 25 years.
"I know I have the capacity to not only win the seat, but to be a strong advocate for the issues that face the electorate."
