Calvary Christian College students have won a multimedia competition run through Safe Food Queensland as part of an awareness campaign to promote egg safety.
The students created Calvary's Happy Hens - an egg selling business which involves raising hens, collecting eggs and following strict guidelines to package them for sale.
Their work was recognised when they won the ‘A Stamped Egg is a Good Egg’ egg safety promotion contest. The competition coincided with NSW and Victoria joining Queensland in introducing compulsory egg stamping in 2014.
Because bad eggs can cause serious illness, egg producers must follow strict routines and procedures and egg stamping is an important part of this process, as it ensures that eggs are traceable.
Students learned about cases of salmonella caused by the use of bad eggs (including the recent event at a Springwood restaurant) which reinforced the importance of ensuring that they have safe food procedures in place as part of their school business.
Safe Food Production Queensland CEO Dr Barbara Wilson, visited students to present them a cheque and a new egg candler.
She congratulated them on their work and suggested that they share what they are doing with other schools.
Students have also been busy working on a new project – the Happy Hens Café, which will open open on March 5.
