WHEN driving to Cleveland's business district, there's a good chance you will need to pull into one of the reverse angle parking spaces along its main streets.
Many drivers are flouting the parking rules, opting instead to cross the road and park with the front of their vehicle at the curb.
This practice might save a few seconds, but Redland City Council says it's causing a safety issue in the town centre.
A council spokesman said the rear angle parking boosted visibility for drivers.
"Rear in parking is preferred in certain areas due to it being a safer parking method," he said.
"This is particularly important where vehicles are required to exit car parks into oncoming traffic as is the case in a number of inner city streets."
The spokesman said the parking style was particularly useful in areas with high pedestrian traffic. Fines could be issued to drivers who parked with their front at the curb.
"It is important for people to understand that the enforcement of rear in parking increases safety for pedestrians and other drivers.
"Council encourages every motorist to check the parking requirements to avoid an infringement notice being issued," he said.
Cafe 42 owner Kirra Norrie said she saw one to two drivers per day park incorrectly in front of her Bloomfield Street business.
She's also witnessed crashes when the drivers reverse out of the spots, crashing into oncoming cars. The most recent crash happened last Monday.
"The last accident (before last week's crash) that was parking related was about four months ago," she said.
