THORNLANDS mum Kelly Newton is raising funds through Go Fund Me to buy a 'cuddle cot' for the Maternity Unit at Redland Hospital.
A cuddle cot is a cooling system that has been designed to fit within a small cot, which allows babies who have passed way to remain with their families so that they are not required to be cooled in a mortuary environment.
Kelly was 37 weeks pregnant when she was told her daughter Amber didn't have a heartbeat.
Within hours she gave birth to her stillborn baby at Redlands Hospital and because she had access to a cuddle cot was able to spend precious time with her daughter before saying goodbye.
"Having a cuddle cot in the hospital room with us was so important because it meant we could spend some quality time with our baby, Amber," she said.
"Being able to hold her and give her cuddles whenever we wanted was such a precious thing and having her with us until we were ready to say goodbye was really special."
Redland Hospital clinical nurse consultant Trish Cottle said it was an amazing achievement for Kelly to put her personal grief aside to raise money for a cuddle cot to donate to the hospital.
"The loss of a baby is an unpredictable event and a second cot could be used in the situation where two families were suffering loss at the same time," she said.
Trish said people dealt with grief in a unique and personal way and a cuddle cot allowed this to occur.
"Families now have a greater opportunity to create memories, invite family and friends to be involved, involve other children with special events, such as bathing and naming ceremonies without the baby leaving their side," she said.
Kelly's wish is to see a cuddle cot in every hospital in Queensland.
