After losing its library to an act of arson in 2011, the Carmel College community has officially opened a new, state-of-the-art facility.
The $3.1m library, in addition to a new food and technology building, science laboratory and renovated visual art facility, are part of a $5.7m expansion of the college’s learning facilities.
The opening ceremony, attended by staff, students, parents, dignitaries from Brisbane Catholic Education and other invited guests, was held at the college on Tuesday, August 25.
College teacher librarian Tony Ogden said it was “terrific” to have the new facility available for students.
“We have been working out of demountables and this is much better now,” he said.
“It’s a beautiful building with a modern design and it’s great to have a new building to work out of.
“Teachers can bring their classes to the library again and the students can see the resources on open display.
“It’s a better work space for everyone and it’s terrific to have everything done.”
Principal Brian Eastaughffe said the new facilities would benefit all Carmel College students, particularly the senior students who have never had a school library before.
“Welcoming 205 Year 7 students to the college in 2015 has seen our school grow to 1125 students in total," Mr Eastaughffe said.
“Additional and upgraded facilities bring a renewed enthusiasm for teaching and learning.
“More importantly, these facilities enable contemporary practices to occur in the teaching and learning environment.”
