While still a councillor, Mr Goleby was elected to state parliament on December 7, 1974, when he won the seat of Redlands for the National Party for the then National-Liberal coalition.
The victory was part of a landslide win for the then National-Liberal coalition. Mr Goleby held the seat continuously after that becoming Minister for Water Resources and Maritime Services in 1982.
He was the first Cabinet Minister from the Redlands electorate.
He died when his tractor rolled on his Mount Cotton farm, now home to mayor Karen Williams, on September 10, 1985.
Cr Williams paid tribute to the man, who shaped Redland shire into Redland city.
“There is not a day in my life that is not touched by the work of John Goleby,” she said. “In serving our community, we build on his contributions to Redland – town water, rail transport and even his dreams for the redevelopment of Toondah Harbour.
“His death was a tragic loss but his legacies should never be forgotten.”
