Redland City Council has approved a $36 million master-planned retail and residential development for Thornlands, which will deliver a supermarket, specialty stores, a service station, medical centre, recreational space and new housing over the coming years.
The new project, to be called Paradise Garden, is on the corner of Boundary Road and Panorama Drive, and is an integrated residential, recreational and lifestyle development by the Wong family, which has held land in Redland for 60 years.
Daniel Wong said his family worked hard to determine the best use for the 6.25 hectare site, landmark, known as the site of the previous Round Shop.
The masterplan includes two precincts, with stage one comprising a 2.4 hectare neighbourhood centre, a 4100sq m full line supermarket, a service station, a retail warehouse, medical centre and a variety of specialty stores.
Stage two will feature a mix of two storey detached and semi detached terrace, townhome and duplex residential dwellings and 1.5 hectares of landscaped parklands which will retain the farmland heritage of the site.
There are also plans for an open air herbal garden café with an emphasis on the use of local produce.
Mr Wong said Paradise Garden would elevate Thornlands’ appeal as a shopping, dining and lifestyle destination with a difference in central Redland Bay.
“My family has a strong connection with this area and we thought very carefully about what Thornlands already offers and what needed to be created in order to make the community an even better place to live, work and play,” he said.
“We decided that Thornlands would benefit most from a neighbourhood centre that could cater for future population growth – with research showing that an additional 3,500 people are expected to move to the area over the next six years."
