Isobel Crossley of Cleveland will be a judge at Queensland’s only begonia show at the Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens auditorium on Saturday, February 27.
A passionate begonia collector, Mrs Crossley was a foundation member of the Queensland Begonia Society, which hosts the annual show.
“I grow them. I kill them. I nurture them,” said Mrs Crossley with a laugh.
There are many varieties of begonias and different factors were taken into account when judging the plants.
Known for her expertise, Mrs Crossley is often asked for advice on growing begonias.
Her one tip is to ensure they are not watered too much, but she does not have much more to add.
“You put it in a pot and hope for the best!”
Begonias originate in tropical and sub-tropical parts of the world, including South and Central America, Africa and Asia.
Some begonias flourish under normal conditions in Australia and others need to be grown in terrariums.
The theme for this year’s show is ‘Begonias on Parade’ and a display will showcase the diversity of begonias.
There are also hundreds of hybrid varieties that will be on display.
Many of the hybrids have been created by Australian growers, including members of the Queensland Begonia Society.
Keen gardeners who attend the show can buy plants, join in a workshop and have the opportunity to choose particular varieties they may wish to grow.
The show is from 9am to 4pm and admission is $3.
Refreshments will also be available.
