Australian and Queensland Firebirds netball captain Laura Geitz made a guest appearance at the Sports Sign-On Day at Victoria Point Shopping Centre on Saturday.
Speaking before meeting some of her fans, Ms Geitz said the people who had the biggest influence in her career were her mother and father.
“If it is not for our mums and dads we definitely aren’t able to do all the things that we want to do,” she said.
Ms Geitz started to play netball at the age of 13 after her parents bought her sister new sports shoes.
“They were the most beautiful shoes I had ever seen,” said Ms Geitz.
“I decided I would go and sign up for netball the next day.”
The netball star never got the shoes, but is still playing 15 years later and has been representing her country for eight years.
She said leadership and being team captain had been a huge learning curve for her.
“It is an honour to lead a team and be captain,” she said.
Sports clubs from around the Redlands were on show at the sign-on day, which was hosted by the shopping centre.
