Kayakers picked up rubbish from a Victoria Point creek on Sunday as part of Clean Up Australia Day.
The group went with Redlands Kayak Tours up Moogarrupam Creek, leaving from Thompson Beach.
The kayakers were joined by five walkers who cleared rubbish from the foreshore of Thompson Beach.
The walkers mostly found cigarette butts and bottle tops, while the kayakers cleared a plastic chair, crab pots, bottles and rope from the creek.
Redlands Kayak Tours owner Katrina Beutel said participating in Clean Up Australia Day was an opportunity to do something for the environment.
“Whilst this was not our rubbish, we are trying to protect our marine life,” she said.
Clean Up Australia Day is a national event in its 26th year.
Over 682,000 volunteers around Australia rallied to clean up local parks, beaches, sporting fields, bushlands, roadways and waterways at over 7117 locations.
This was an increase of nearly 1000 sites from 2015.
Founder of Clean Up Australia Ian Kiernan said the event made him proud to be an Australian.
“Results in progress predict volunteers will have removed around 15.6 thousand tonnes of rubbish over a week of action,” he said.
“For me every day is Clean Up Australia Day, and while it’s great to focus community attention on a national event, we all need to take more responsibility for the rubbish we create every day of the year.”
