In a bruising and torrid match against the Goodna Gladiators at Goodna on the weekend, with a battered Redlands’ Firsts team losing narrowly by one point, 20 – 19.
The Muddies’ three tries to equal that of Goodna was little consolation as the team failed to capitalise on Goodna’s indiscretions that resulted in a red and two yellow cards to Gladiator players.
This game was a wake-up call for the Muddies’ players, who need to focus on their skills to overcome physical intimidation by an opposition, to maintain composure and to be clinical in the execution of the game plan.
The Seconds continued their winning way with a convincing win over Goodna, 25 – 5. The women’s team lost to Wests, continuing Wests’ domination of Redlands this year.
Head coach Mike King is now looking to this Saturday’s Ladies Day games against Riverside to boost the Muddies’ finals chances.
Both teams are expected to be at full strength and playing in front of a large home crowd should bring out the best of the Muddies’ running style of play. The Firsts play at 3pm, Seconds 1.30pm. As the ladies dress to impress, the players are keen to impress with their on-field performances.
Over the years, Redlands has had a great record of developing junior players for representative honours. So far in 2016, the following Muddies’ players have achieved representative selection: U12 - Luke Hartley, Hamish Lavelle, Shannon Puna, Max Sinclair and Cody Te Rupe; U13 BJRU Brisbane Gold - Corey Nikora; and, U15 Metropolitan East - Thomas Feeney. Congratulations boys.
The recent Reds vs Sunwolves Super Rugby game was a special occasion for the Muddies Modified Rugby Program when players and mentors played one of the curtain raisers. Apart from playing on the hallowed ground and mixing with the St George Dragon, the boys were part of the tunnel as the big boys ran on to the field for the main game. What an experience for both players and mentors.
