THE Oaklands Street Community Garden will drum up a little business on Sunday, July 31.
The Redland Ladies Drum Corp and the Dukes of Yuke will put on a show at the site’s annual open day.
Garden spokeswoman Gillian Tilney said the event also would celebrate National Tree Day.
“Activities will include garden tours and talks on sensory gardens, no-dig gardens, propagation/seed raising, and keeping bees and worms,’’ she said.
“On sale will be a great range of plants, garden produce, jams, wooden planter boxes and tool racks, all grown or made by garden volunteers.’’
There will be refreshments, baked goodies and hot food on sale and a lucky entry prize, with all proceeds towards the garden at Oaklands Street, Alexandra Hills. The event will run from 10am to 2pm.
Planet Ark wants as many people as possible to join the country’s biggest nature care initiative and
tree planting event for Schools Tree Day on Friday July 29 or National Tree Day on July 31.
The day is a chance for people to unite with thousands of generous, green-minded individuals to reconnect with nature, enjoy and protect Australia’s natural environment.
National Tree Day Manager Debbie Agnew said people could join a local community site or plant in their own backyard.
“Research shows that we are becoming increasingly disconnected from the natural world, yet spending time in nature induces positive feelings such as relaxation, calmness, self-worth and enjoyment through a number of physiological mechanisms, including activating the brain’s dopamine reward system,” she said.
Last year nearly 300,000 people took part at more than 3500 sites across the country, planting
more than 1.2 million native trees, shrubs and edibles and helping to green urban areas.
