ONE of the Redlands much loved foreshore fig trees has died after five years of work trying to save it.
The tree at Cleveland Point will be cut down by Redland City Council next month.
Countless thousands have had picnics under the tree which is thought to be more than 50 years old. Arborists believe it would have been much larger had it not been in such an exposed site.
A council spokesman said the fig would be removed by August 2 and another fig planted.
“Sadly, as its appearance shows, this ficus tree ... has died despite the best efforts of council staff and a consultant arborist to save it,’’ he said.
Staff had tried mulching, different watering regimes and pruning to save it. Its demise was likely caused by the harsh environment and soil compaction.
