THE Redlands SES rescue team was recognised by the council on Wednesday after winning the Brisbane Region SES Rescue Competition last month.
Acting Mayor Wendy Boglary said the rescue team had proved their training, team work, leadership and clear thinking were a winning combination.
As a result of the win the team will be one of seven SES teams from across Queensland to compete in the state level challenge in Townsville in April.
The Redlands team comprised Joel Muraca, Justin Kirkby, Tim Williss, Corey Armstrong, Tristan Hardwick and Steph Samuels.
Cr Boglary said she had become much more aware and appreciative of the value of the SES unit and its volunteers since being appointed deputy chair of the Local Disaster Management Group.
“It is comforting to know that we have such dedicated and highly trained volunteers when they are needed to swing into action to support our community,” she said.
Cr Boglary said SES volunteers were often termed angels in orange.
“They are ordinary people who do an extraordinary job within their community.”
The six-person team demonstrated search and rescue, water rescue and height recovery skills in three challenging scenarios while working with other emergency services.
Four of the Redlands team members had only been in the SES for less than 18 months and the team had trained for just five weeks.
“The team is justifiably proud of what they achieved and we are proud of them,” said Cr Boglary.
