Three new names were added to the list of those killed in the line of duty at this year’s National Police Remembrance Day service, held on September 29 at the Redlands Christian Reformed Church at Ormiston.
They were Constable Benjamin Ebbitt (died 1849), Senior Constable Henry Fetherston (1885) and Sergeant Thomas Heaney (1906).
Police officers, retired police officers, fire and rescue officers, volunteers in policing and Crime Stoppers workers were represented at the service which honoured 143 Queensland police who have been lost performing their duty since 1861.
Rev. Jim de Witte said most would share his wish that no further names would be added. Acting Chief Superintendent Paul Ziebarth, speaking on behalf of Commissioner Ian Stewart said September 29 was an important day on a policeman’s calendar.
“There is no greater sacrifice that can be made.”
He said the service also recognised the role police officers played as part of the community.
