DOES your garden give you pleasure or do you feel guilty for not spending more time in it?
Gardening teacher Kate Wall says being time poor is the main excuse people use for delaying planting. However, there are shortcuts to creating a successful garden that suits your lifestyle.
Ms Wall – who will speak at a Redlands Organic Growers Inc meeting – has a degree in environmental biology, runs workshops, does consulting work, garden makeovers and owns a wonderful cottage garden.
She admits her busy lifestyle combined with raising a family leaves little time to spend in her own garden.
“As an eco-gardener my inability to feed my family out of my own garden left me feeling somewhat inadequate,’’ she said.
“Vegies might be reasonably easy to grow but they do need regular small amounts of attention and that is not always easy to give.”
Ms Wall gave up on her vegetable patch and grew flowers instead, becoming a much happier and contented gardener.
“I found I had no less food in the garden for the loss of my unsuccessful vegie patch,’’ she said.
“But that is not to say there is nothing to eat in my garden, far from it.
“Actually, some of the greens I grow are more nutritious than what is on offer at the supermarket.”
