RENOVATIONS at Queensland’s first full-time primary school for children with autism start in Alexandra Hills this week.
The Sycamore School due to open in January will be located in an unused building at the Alexandra Hills TAFE.
Cindy Corrie, a director of the not-for-profit that established the school, said they would cater for 70 students in prep to year 6.
The school would also provide personal development opportunities for teachers from other schools.
“They will be able to spend time in our classrooms,” she said.
Ms Corrie and her husband started to set up the school about two years ago after realising that their autistic son was outgrowing the special school he attended.
Unable to cope in a mainstream school, there were no other options for him in Queensland.
A school and business have donated furniture and a hardware store will help make a garden and mural at the school’s entrance.
