A walk for diabetes held on October 16 at Beth Boyd Park, Thorneside raised funds and awareness for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Organisers Kristyn Ranson (a parent of a daughter living with Type 1 diabetes) and Claire Childes (Credentialled Diabetes Educator) were joined by the local community to raise funds to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes. The condition currently affects about 120,000 Australians.
"Raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of Type 1 diabetes could save a child's life,” Ms Childes said.
“The most common symptoms are frequency in passing urine, extreme thirst, tiredness and sudden weight loss."
Both Ms Childes and Ransom thanked all walkers and those involved.
"More precious than anything is when we receive comments from parents saying how special their child living with Type 1 diabetes felt by being asked to come to the front to officially start the walk," Ms Ransom said.
The regional walk started in 2013 and has since raised more than $47,000.
