REDLAND City councillor Paul Golle is pushing for a water play facility similar to Wynnum’s water-spouting whales to be installed at a new Thornlands park.
His call for water play in the park on Cleveland-Redland Bay Road, next to Pinklands Reserve, comes as council investigates the idea of a water park in the Cleveland Aquatic Centre precinct.
A council spokesman said research and benchmarking had been undertaken for the water park with other council areas and a council presentation done in mid-2016.
“Water park elements have been under consideration within Redland City including opportunities within Cleveland Aquatic Centre precinct,” he said.
Cr Golle said draft designs were being developed for the Thornlands park and he welcomed ideas from the community.
He wants the park to cater for all ages and abilities.
“I would like the park to incorporate water play and have a heritage feel with flying foxes and treehouses,” Cr Golle said.
He said a rotunda for small live music concerts would also bring people to the area.
“Thornlands is a beautiful suburb and the people of the community deserve awesome parks and live-able active spaces to enjoy.
“It’s now time to get their feedback on what they would like to see so I can advocate on their behalf and get the job done,” Cr Golle said.
A spokesman for Redland City Council said the council had acquired land and commenced planning for the park.
Community engagement on the park was planned for early this year.
The spokesman said facilities could include a large multi-age playground, nature play area, picnicking facilities, physical exercise opportunities, dog off-leash area, public toilets, youth zone, events space, Wi-Fi and water refill stations.
The park would also be connected to the Moreton Bay Cycleway.
The spokesman said a footpath in William Stewart Park, also in Thornlands, was in the planning stage.
This would enable walkers and runners to do a circuit in the park.
The Mount Cotton park has been upgraded to include an all abilities play area, flying fox, pedal coaster and nature play facilities.
A new skate park will be constructed in the first half of this year.
“Footpath lighting is also planned to the existing dog off-leash area, playground and skate park, plus additional electrical power access for events will be constructed,” the spokesman said.
Additional park upgrades being planned include a small dog off-leash area, extra picnic shelters and seating and investigation into car parking options.
