REDLAND City Council has received a $200,000 boost for its work on tackling beach erosion at places like Amity on North Stradbroke Island.
Council will get $195,650 from the state government’s QCoast2100 Program for phases 1-5 of the strategy, which will identify and develop coastal hazard management plans.
It comes after council announced that a sand replenishment program will start at the popular Wilson Esplanade area, Victoria Point, in the new financial year.
Mayor Karen Williams said the hazard management funding, approved by the Local Government Association of Queensland, would allow council to get on the front foot in tackling erosion on the mainland and islands.
“This grant recognises the significant issues that we face as a relatively small council with about 220km of coast,’’ Cr Williams said.
“Officers have worked closely with the LGAQ on our needs and we very much appreciate its backing, and the support of the state government through its QCoast2100 Program, as we proactively plan for the future of our coastal areas.’’
Phase 1 of the Redland City Council Coastal Adaptation Strategy will provide an assessment methodology for identifying hazards.
When finalised, the overall strategy will provide a consistent approach to managing existing and emerging coastal hazards, as well as planning.
“With phase 1 adopted, we are now about to begin community engagement as part of phase 2, which looks at emerging risks,’’ Cr Williams said.
“This will confirm community values and long-term concerns for areas of our coastline, allowing us to better plan for the long-term sustainable management of coastal and foreshore areas.
“Importantly, it will provide greater clarity on what the best course of action is for identified areas, while confirming areas of known priority such as Amity Point.’’
