AN Alexandra Hills resident has called for a 50km/h speed zone on McMillan Road to be clearly signposted.
Greg Atkinson has been fined for travelling at 57km/h and 61km/h on a straight stretch of the road that has a reserve on one side.
Having queried the fines, Mr Atkinson said he was told by the Transport Department that the road was a 50km/h zone as it was regarded as a built-up area.
The section of road is between Allenby and McDonald roads, both of which are 60km/h zones.
Mr Atkinson said signs would ensure people were aware of the rules for that road.
“I wanted to make people aware, not just for my own sake, but so other people don’t get caught as well,” he said.
Mr Atkinson said he intended to go to court to oppose the infringement notices for speeding.
Cr Tracey Huges said she had received a complaint about the speed limit on McMillan Road from Mr Atkinson and one other driver over the past year.
A council spokesperson said speed limits in Queensland were set in line with the Transport Department’s Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, which did not support the installation of 50km/h signs at McMillan Road.
“The MUTCD states 50km/h speed restriction signs should not generally be installed in local streets and shall not be used to try to control the speed of traffic in those streets,” the spokesperson said.
