CLOSED-CIRCUIT cameras will soon be installed at Southern Moreton Bay Island ferry terminals to reduce anti-social behaviour on jetties.
Bowman MP Andrew Laming has provided $10,000 for the CCTV system through the federal government’s Safer Communities Fund.
He said the fund was a significant and important investment in cracking down on crime and anti-social behaviour.
“As we all know, CCTV and security infrastructure has been a pivotal factor in both solving crimes and preventing crimes,” Mr Laming said.
Bay Islands Chamber of Commerce vice-president Col McInnes said the funding would be used to install two cameras on the jetty and walkway at each of the four islands.
Mr McInnes said island community organisations could install cameras in car parks and link them to the funded CCTV infrastructure.
“They could use the same monitor and recorder, but have to come up with the funding for the cameras,” he said.
Mr McInnes said the Lamb Island Residents Association had approved the funding of additional cameras on Lamb Island after the federal government funding was announced in June last year.
Justice Minister Michael Keenan said the Safer Communities Fund provided money to councils and community organisations for the installation of fixed and mobile CCTV or lighting.
“The Coalition government has a strong track record when it comes to protecting community safety,’’ he said. “We recognise that the best way to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour is to prevent it from happening.
“Our top priority will always be to keep our citizens and our communities safe. This small investment makes a huge difference for island commuters.”
