THE tranquil Moreton Bay waters surrounding Macleay Island have proven the perfect place to competitively paddle.

Tingaira Boat Club commodore Neville Prosser said the stunning views offered in the 15km looped course around the island ensured The Macleay Island Classic continued to attract entrants from far and wide.
Mr Prosser said the weekend-long event, held earlier this month from May 13, was raced by more than 80 stand-up paddlers, canoeists and dragon boat team members from waterside places spanning Coffs Harbour to the Sunshine Coast.
He said the gorgeous scenery on show was the point of difference, compared to other water sports competitions held at lakes.
“You have got a view when paddling and you are not just paddling around and around a buoyed course,” he said.
The Macleay Island’s own Barracoutas won the relay race, with Brad Hagan the fastest man to circumnavigate Macleay Island – it took Mr Hagan one hour and six minutes to paddle about 15km.
Mr Hagan was followed closely by Matthew O’Garey and Tegan Fraser, who took about one hour and nine minutes to complete the event.
Mr Prosser said plans would be underway to make next year’s 10th annual Macleay Island Classic bigger and better.
