Redland Hospital has celebrated a record delivery with the births of five sets of twins in a week.
The pidgeon pairs are three sets of girl-boy twins and one set each of girl-girl and boy-boy rounding out the five.
Midwifery unit manager Janet Knowles said it was extremely unusual to have so many sets of twins born in one week and was something she had never seen in her five years at Redland Hospital.
She said three sets were induced, one set was a planned caesarean and one pair was born under spontaneous labour.
“Only one of the five sets are premmie so all but that set of twins are not in the special care nursery which means lots of extra work for our wonderful team of midwives,” Ms Knowles said.
Victoria Point’s Tegan Kirkman delivered the largest of the twins in the bunch with Xavier ( 3680g) and Olive (3520g) born via caesarean.
Ashlee Avery’s little bundles bring her family brood to five, with Hunter and Harlow joining an older sister, 8, and two big brothers, 6 and 2, at home.
Ashlee said Hunter was born one kilogram heavier than his sister Harlow who, despite being significantly smaller, is still older than her brother by one whole minute.
Caterina Shefford’s little boys will receive ongoing care in the hospital’s special care nursery for several weeks after entering the world at 34 weeks.
She said her first skin-to-skin cuddle with Luca on Thursday was amazing and helped him settle for the rest of the day.
