Rockliff meets Blues as he weighs up future

Brisbane free agent Tom Rockliff met Carlton officials on Tuesday and will meet Port Adelaide later this week as he weighs up whether to leave the Lions.

Rockliff has had a medical at Carlton and is likely to have a medical with Port when he meets them.

Brisbane are keen to re-sign the midfielder after his relationship with the club recovered this year with the arrival of coach Chris Fagan and his move out of the captaincy.

Carlton's interest in Rockliff is strong regardless of what happens with champion midfielder Bryce Gibbs, who is contracted to the Blues for next year and has said he is happy to remain at the club - a position he repeated publicly at the Brownlow on Monday night.

Last year Gibbs sought a trade to Adelaide after his wife had just had their first child, but a deal could not be struck between the Crows and the Blues. This year Gibbs has said he is happy to remain at Carlton again next year and has not asked to be traded to Adelaide. But he has said if Adelaide were to seek a deal and the two clubs could agree then he would be open to a move. Critically, this year Gibbs is not pushing the deal.

Out-of-contract Adelaide defender Jake Lever is almost certain to nominate Melbourne as the club he wishes to be traded to.

Meanwhile, Port's Jackson Trengove will join the Bulldogs as a free agent when the player movement period starts next week.

Gold Coast small forward Brandon Matera will be traded to Fremantle. He has had a medical at the Dockers and is likely to move. Hard-running Giants defender Nathan Wilson is almost certain to seek a trade to Fremantle.

Giant Devon Smith is likely to be traded, with Geelong among clubs to have expressed an interest. Gary Ablett has also announced that he wants a trade to Geelong.

Out-of-contract Giants midfielder Matthew Kennedy is also being sought by clubs. The Giants have a tight salary cap, especially after re-signing Josh Kelly, and Kennedy could be one of the players let go because of cap pressure. He could also seek a move after battling to cement a regular game in the Giants' midfield.
