BRYCE Fullwood almost did not make it to Mount Panorama this year, so when he topped the time sheet in the opening Dunlop Super2 Series practice at the track, he was delighted.
Fullwood pulled out his quickest lap in his last trip around the circuit in the 40-minute session, clocking a two minutes, 7.5259 seconds effort.
It saw him nudge out Paul Dumbrell, a man who has won six races so far this season to lead the development series ranking.
Dumbrell had topped the time sheet for much of the session, his best lap a 2:07.5684. It is an indication he will be hard to beat come Saturday’s 250 kilometre enduro, a race he has dominated since the series adopted the format in 2014.
But the spotlight on Thursday morning belonged to Fullwood and his MW Motorsport Nissan Altima.
“I’ve got time reference in my car, so I came out after the first corner there and I had a pretty decent run there and I thought ‘I could be on for a pretty good lap here’,” he said.
“It was the last lap I was going to get, so I put everything into it. My first two sectors had been pretty strong, it was just the last sector I struggle a little bit, so I knew if I kept doing what I had in the first two and tidied up the last one, I could be on for a good lap.
“I am extremely pleased, the car was good, we made a little change in the session there and while it actually didn’t feel any better, it clearly went faster.
“PD is obviously the person to beat here, so getting that lap, very happy.
“It was a very good way to start the weekend at the mountain. It was only this time last week that we made the decision to come.
“The support we’ve got from sponsors has been fantastic, it these guys that make this happen, so I’m just really pumped.”
