Students were from Alexandra Hills, Cleveland District State High schools and Redlands, Faith, Sheldon and Carmel colleges.
The students were among 956 students to attend the seventeenth annual event and were selected from more than 2500 students; nominated by 165 state, private and distance education schools, traveling from as far as Mount Isa and Cairns.
A Year 10 student at Redland College Ross MacCann, 16 of Wellington Point described the program as “a great experience”.
“I found it quite professional and I learned a lot. It was good to work with people I have never played with before. I feel I improved a lot and it certainly boosted my confidence. Playing trombone is sometimes hard, but it's also a lot of fun,” Ross said.
Ross studies trombone with Phil Davis of Wellington Point.
The event culminated in five concerts, featuring four wind and two string orchestras, a Celtic string ensemble, three vocal ensembles, a symphony orchestra and big band.
In a reciprocal program between Seattle and Brisbane 12 American college students were selected to represent the prestigious Pacific Honours Ensemble Program (PHEP) during SHEP at South Bank. Nineteen Queensland students from Atherton, Barcaldine, Brisbane, Cairns, Charters Towers, Gladstone, Hervey Bay, Redlands, Rockhampton, Townsville and Tully will travel to Seattle during November to attend the Western International Band Clinic as part of the PHEP reciprocal exchange program.
