He’s done the ride more than 10 times and has no intention of stopping.
Mr Sallows said he regularly rode with U3A Redlands members.
“I used to cycle as a kid and when I moved up here (from Sydney) I used to get the Sydney Morning Herald.
“So I started riding a bike from Oyster Point (Victoria Point) to Bloomfield Street (Cleveland) to get the paper.
“That was nearly 20 years ago.”
One thing led to another and Mr Sallows started riding with U3A cycling groups which sometimes take part in larger rides, like to the Gold Coast.
“They’re a pretty cosmopolitan group and have cycled all over the world,” he said.
“We usually go away every year on cycling trips to places like NZ, Victoria and NSW where we usually hire the bikes.
“We have a lot of fun.”
He said he did his last Gold Coast ride two weeks ago in a slow time of 4.5 hours because of rain.
Mr Sallows said he planned to keep cycling as long as he could for health reasons.
“The doctor has told me that the view of turf is much better from this side so I plan to keep on riding,” he said.
“It has kept me alive. I have no doubt about that.”
And does he ride the return leg from the Gold Coast to the Redlands?
“No. I’m not that crazy to ride back home,” he said.
U3A is also known as the University of the Third Age.
