Alex and Janet Begbie of Birkdale will celebrate 60 years of marriage on November 23.
The couple married in New Zealand and raised five children, three of whom live in the Redlands. They now have 10 grand children and one great grand daughter.
They moved to Brisbane in 1988 and became well known in the area as the owners of the Cut Price (now IGA) store at Birkdale Fair with Janet’s sister and husband. The store was sold before Woolworths opened next door, having owned it for eight years..
The Begbies then returned to New Zealand briefly where they bought a motel. They retired back to Birkdale in 1998 and became avid golfers at Carbrook, Howeston and the Wellington Point Hotel social club.
Alex has since retired from golf, but Janet continues her game every Tuesday at Howeston.
They spend their time with the grand children and children.
