Plenty of the fish to be caught in the South East

Catches have been at an all time high, with some anglers reporting half a dozen hookups for an evening fish.

Most people are hopping vibration lures off the bottom, but just about anything goes, including artificial prawns and live bait.

There is no real top spot. The mouth of smaller feeder creeks and the drop into the main channel are the most popular.

There has also been a few threadfin caught in the Logan River. 

Bait is producing the best results, in particular live prawns and herring.

Whiting catches have been great over the past month and all the usual haunts are firing. 

The trick is to move around and get away from the small bream, they’re generally faster to find the bait than the whiting.

There were good numbers of flathead caught this week from Jumpinpin.

Anglers getting the best results are drifting and casting towards the shallower banks, working them into the deeper water or trolling the edge of the main channels with deep divers.

The bit of rain we had got mud crabs on the move and it’s worth putting pots in if you’re on the water. There’s also been lots of sandies caught in the bay as well.

There has been a few snapper and grassies caught from the bay island shallows, especially in the early morning. On the offshore scene, spotties have been hit and miss at Palm Beach and Mermaid reefs.

There have been a few Spanish mackerel, wahoo and tuna caught around exposed headlands including Cape Moreton, Hutchies and The Group. Fishing the bottom has mainly turned up tuskfish and pearl perch.

In the freshwater, western impoundments are still the hot spot this week, in particular Glenlyon and Leslie dams. Rivers have not been as good because of the cold water being released from impoundments.

Redclaw catches have improved in Somerset and Wivenhoe. There is still nothing during the day but anglers are reporting 100 plus overnight from four pots, or more from a hot spot. There’s still plenty of bass on the bite, most are schooled up over the old river bed in impoundments. 

The upper Brisbane River is another good spot if you spend time reading a map to find access points.
