Traffic lights are being installed at the Giles Road intersection and the road is being widened further north at bus shelters between Benfer Street and Magnolia Parade and at Anita Street soon.
Motorists have reported peak hour traffic backed up to German Church Road, which is about one kilometre south of the Giles Road intersection upgrade.
Shoreline Redlands is partially funding the intersection project, which chief executive Chris Barnes said was brought forward two years for driver safety.
The intersection claimed the life of an 82-year-old man last year after his car ploughed into the side of a bus. Several crashes have occurred at the blackspot since then, prompting renewed calls by residents for the site’s improvement.
Mr Barnes said dedicated right and left turning lanes, traffic islands and storm drainage would be installed, with the road widened and cycle lanes also added.
He said the eight-month project was already 60 per cent finished, with reduced speeds in place until mid-this year.
“The road works are forecast to be completed June subject to wet weather, however all efforts are being made to compress the project time frames wherever possible to minimise disruption to the commuters,” he said.
“It is … fantastic that Department of Transport and Main Roads has worked with Shoreline at great lengths to priorities these works ahead of schedule.”
About $2.3 million was contributed to the project by state government, with the remainder pitched in by Shoreline. Redland City Bulletin asked Shorline how much it was contributing but that detail was not disclosed.
Further money is being spent by Redland City Council to replace bus shelters near Anita and Creekwood streets and Magnolia Parade.
A council spokesperson said roads would be widened for bus pull-in spaces at the shelters, with works near Creekwood Street and Magnolia Parade expected to finish mid-next month.
