Moreton Bay College student Charli Woosnam, 13, of Thornlands was recognised recently for her prowess on the hockey field with a Bonner Bright Star award from MP Ross Vasta.
In December last year, Charli played in the Under 12 Queensland team which won at the Pacific School Games in Adelaide. Charli plays centre half and mid field.
Earlier she also competed in State championships, held in Maryborough and Ipswich as a member of the both the under 13 and under 15 teams.
Charli’s next goal is to get into the under 13 State team and compete again this year.
Charli’s dedication to hockey was almost preordained, coming from a strong hockey playing family. Her mother Melanie, a former Australian player, now plays for division 2 women’s, her father Matthew plays for division three men’s and brother Jay 15 for division 2 mens. All are players with the Roosters at the Gold Coast.
“We play hockey quite a bit, usually every afternoon,” Charli said.
Charli is also a member of the junior A team at school which came second last year in the QGSSSA competition. She also plays touch football, does swimming and a little cricket at school.
“Hockey is a really good sport. I enjoy the team aspect of the sport and it’s fun,” she said.
Charli said she hopes to play for Australia when she leaves school and would like to study to be a physiotherapist.
