THE Easter weekend is over but we still have two weeks left of the school holidays.
What are you planning to do with your kids?
See our ideas and add your own in the comment section below.
1. Go island-hopping
We have beautiful islands just off the mainland from the Redlands.
From Victoria Point you can catch a ferry to Coochiemudlo Island. Things to do: Enjoy sand beaches and clear water in which to swim. Walk around the island. Hire a boat. A cafe and the island resort serve food and drinks.
Take a walk-on ferry from Toondah to Dunwich or One Mile on North Stradbroke Island. From there catch the public bus to Point Lookout. Things to do: Swimming, gorge walk, lazy lunch at the point. (Alternatively, you can take a car on the vehicular ferries.)
Go to Weinam Creek ferry terminal at Redland Bay and take a boat ride to the Southern Moreton Bay Islands. Get off at one island and hop back on the next ferry or simply do the round trip. The ferry takes gocards.
2. Visit out a local park
FAVOURITES for Redlands parents are:
- Beth Boyd Park, Thorneside: For playing on the wooden ship
- Wellington Point Reserve: For Climbing trees, paddling in the water and walking to King Island
- Apex Park, Ormiston: For riding bikes
- Raby Bay Foreshore Park: For having a barbecue and riding scooters
- Mount Cotton Park: For having a barbecue, riding scooters and the playground
3. Enjoy the Games spirit at the Redlands Carnivale
Daily activities are available at Raby Bay Harbour Park, Cleveland, as part of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games celebration. There’s a big screen to watch all the action between 10am and 9pm daily, including the official opening ceremony at 6pm on Wednesday, April 4.
See the program below:
4. Go to the Redland Museum
THE museum makes for a pretty cheap day out while you learn about the olden days. The displays are interesting for kids and adults alike. It’s at 60 Smith Street, Cleveland, and is part of the broader Cleveland Showgrounds complex. Check opening hours in the holiday period.
5. Get creative
BUNNINGS hardware store holds creative workshops for children during the school holiday. Check out your local store to see what they have planned. Bunnings Victoria Point will hold workshops to decorate a birdhouse and paint a paper mache owl.
6. Explore a library
LIBRARIES have spaces for reading, exploring online and also hold activities during the school holidays.
Have a look on the Redland City Council calendar to see what is on offer this holiday.
7. Plant for koalas
HELP build the native wildlife corridor at Eprapah Creek, Victoria Point on April 8. Details here.
8. Take on a challenge
Take the kids along to a session at Obstacle Obsession. Based on Karingal Road, Mount Cotton kids can have fun without electronics by climbing, crawling, running and getting muddy.
9. Catch a movie
THERE are a few family blockbusters on the big screen during the Easter school holidays. First up, hop into the world of a beloved storybook character in Peter Rabbit before joining Sherlock Gnomes in the movie of the same name as he investigates a mysterious case of missing gnomes around London.
Viewers of Early Man will be taken on a journey to a time where prehistoric creatures and woolly mammoths roamed the earth. Also up this holiday is A Wrinkle in Time, which takes audiences across dimensions of time and space, examining the nature of darkness versus light.
Event Cinemas have also provided free creative activities for kids to take part in during their day out at the movies. See their website for details.
10. Shopping centre activities
MANY shopping centres hold activities for kids during the school holidays. Victoria Point Shopping Centre has chocolate freckle-making classes, while Athlete’s Foot Capalaba and Ascent Footwear are teaching younger kids how to tie laces on April 3 and April 4. (The skill teaching comes as a poll finds two-thirds of Australian kids aged between three and five could navigate a smartphone or tablet, 70 per cent could play a basic computer game and 58 per cent could ride a bike but only 8 per cent could tie their shoe laces.)
