The friendly and accessible GPs at Aqua Marine Medical Centre & Skin Clinic have been joined by a new colleague this year.
Dr Heather Carcary MBBS has embraced the challenge of transferring from her previous role as senior medical officer in the emergency department of the Mount Isa Hospital to join the team at Aqua Marine Medical Centre.
Dr Carcary grew up in a small town called Millaa Millaa in Far North Queensland on a dairy farm where she learnt many things including how to milk a cow.
She attended the local high school and was one of the first students to go to university to study medicine in approximately 50 years.
“I had an interesting journey to becoming a doctor - I was not accepted directly from high school and I studied nursing for a year prior to transferring into medicine a James Cook University (Townsville),” Dr Carcary said.

“My university holidays were filled with many farm jobs including milking the cows, feeding the calves and fencing.
“The question has often been asked of my why did I become a doctor and not a vet? And my response…I have always wanted to be a doctor, I have never thought of becoming a vet, and besides an animal can not tell you where is hurts or what is wrong.”
Dr Carcary’s initial career goal was rural and remote medicine – providing general medical services, obstetric and women’s health to patients in rural and remote Queensland.
But life has taken her on a different path after she met her fiancé.
“I have relocated from Mount Isa in remote North Western Queensland, but my passion for women’s health remains,” she added.
