Capalaba Lions Club has helped boost inclusion for people with disabilities through a donation of $20,000 to CPL’s Capalaba centre.
Lions club members were recently invited to the centre in order to see their donation in action and to be thanked for the club’s generous contribution. Some of the donation has already been spent creating accessible pathways.
President of the Capalaba Lions Club Jan Bastin said club members were very proud to be able to assist.
“It is such a worthwhile cause to help people with disabilities, and we really believe in helping people in our community in whatever way we can. We wanted to support CPL’s Capalaba centre to make sure it was as accessible as possible. So that’s why we donated $20,000 so they could put it towards new pathways and renovations,” Ms Bastin said.
Area manager for CPL’s Capalaba centre Michael Blaney said that these pathways had already mad a huge difference for CPL’s clients and employees.
“The pathways make our centre more accessible, safe and inclusive for everyone. Our clients can now access everything we have to offer here in Capalaba, like the raised garden beds outside and our gardening programs,” Mr Blaney said.
“The pathways also encourage more inclusion and participation with our clients, especially when it comes to outdoor activities. It is so important to create an accessible and inclusive environment at our centres. We want everyone to feel welcome, safe and empowered to make their own choices, even if it seems as simple as going outside for fresh air.
“We can’t thank the Lions club enough for making this possible. We are all so grateful, and we will be making great use of the new additions to the centre.”
The remainder of the donation was put towards a new accessible kitchen at the centre. The new kitchen allows people with disabilities to participate in cooking, life skills and independent living programs, in order to maximise independence and learn new community skills.
