REDLAND Bay resident Lillian Edwards has called for people to bin their litter or take it home.
Ms Edwards said she picked up bags of litter during a 1.5 kilometre walk with her dog.
“This rubbish goes into our creeks and rivers and then the sea so think about what is going to happen to the litter after you drop it,” she said.
“Older people won’t see the devastation all this rubbish is going to cause but the younger generation will feel the consequences.”
Ms Edwards’ appeal comes ahead of Queensland’s single use plastic bag ban on July 1.
She said if people walking their dogs picked up rubbish along the way it would make a difference.
Ms Edwards also called on adults to educate children about the impact of litter.
“I pulled up some children for throwing a chip bag into our waterways the other week,” she said.
“I explained to them what would happen to that plastic.”
During last month’s Clean Up Australia Day, founder Ian Kiernan said people should consider that day as the start of their clean up journey.
“Making a real difference starts with looking more closely at our personal purchasing behaviour, becoming conscious of the single use products, packaging and plastics that we buy and then discard,” Mr Kiernan said.
“We need to continue to challenge our governments to implement effective waste management and recycling programs to reduce the amount of wasted resource that ends up in our precious environment.”
