LOTS of flathead reported this week, they are coming from the edges of the main channels.
Trolling deep divers just outside the channel markers has been one of the better techniques.
Top spots at Jumpinpin have been the eastern side of Short Island, The Pig Styes and the northern end of the Never Fail Islands.
Over the past month bream turned up out of season as a result of all the rain. They’re still around in numbers with some fish close to 1kg landed from the Brisbane River. At Jumpinpin, they are small but there’s been a few bigger fish in the Gold Coast Seaway.
There’s also big schools of trevally in the Seaway taking lures and live herring. The Brisbane River continues to surprise with its consistency. Threadfin and mulloway are the target species and given the numbers caught I’m wondering just how many are there.
Hot technique is to slow hop vibes over the bottom but do not be afraid to try something new. Fish often learn what gets them caught and switch off. There’s been a few prawns in the Pine River however best catches have been around the Powerlines to Jacobs Well.
In Moreton Bay there’s been an increase in the number of snapper caught. The shallows around the bay islands are fishing best at dawn, dusk and through the night and the deeper water artificial reefs are best during the day. A few large banana prawns have been one of the better baits.
There’s plenty of school mackerel in the bay. They are popping up just about everywhere but the bottom of Moreton, the Sandhills, Four Beacons are all consistent producers.
It’s prime muddy time and plenty were reported this week from all estuary waters.
There’s been a few dolphinfish on the Wave Rider Buoy off Point Lookout but they spook after the first is caught. Fishing the bottom has turned up mainly tuskfish and a few snapper. There has been spotty mackerel off the Seaway and Palm Beach Reef but few reported off South Passage.
On the freshwater scene redclaw are at their best for the season.
