Kane Leonard, 11, of Macleay Island has won gold at the Special Olympics held in Adelaide from April 16 to 20.
Kane scored more than three 18-hole rounds to win the medal, winning both the nett and gross best scores for the tournament. His win has qualified him for the World Games to be held next year in Dubai, but he is too young to compete.
Bay Island golf club’s pennants manager Jeff Ridge said club members were justifiably proud of his achievement and that the club had raised $3,400 towards sending him to the competition.
The games attracted more than 1000 athletes.
Playing off a handicap of 14 Kane has won honour board events at the Bay Islands club including Medal of Medals (twice), B Grade Matchplay championship and Open Match Play championship. He is also a member of the Division 2 pennants team.
“With his keen eye and great natural swing there is no doubt he will be a low handicap golfer in the very near future,” Mr Ridge said.
Mr Ridge said Kane was one of three up and coming juniors at the club, with his elder brother Jake, 17, playing of a handicap of two. Also a high performer is Jack Burnitt, 12.
Mr Ridge said he and Terry Fry offered free coaching to juniors and adults wishing to play, but these three had surpassed their ability.
“They play with lower handicaps and are better golfers than me,” Mr Ridge said.
Mr Ridge said the club raised funds to support its juniors, sending the boys to Hills Academy at Jimboomba for professional coaching once a year.
