It’s finally here.
The superhero film 10 years in the making has arrived and it does not disappoint.
Avengers: Infinity War is the most jam-packed, crazy, star-studded and gloriously over-the-top Marvel movie ever.
It is the culmination of everything the juggernaut studio has been working towards since the release of Iron Man back in 2008.
The film sees all our favourite superheroes (okay, almost all our favourite heroes, a couple of them are noticeably absent) facing an impossible enemy – Thanos.
Thanos, who is portrayed via motion capture by Oscar-nominee Josh Brolin (Only the Brave), has been teased in past films but really comes to life in Infinity War.
He is scouring the universe for the six Infinity Stones, which, when combined, will give him unlimited power.
The scope of this film is seriously huge.
The action takes place on Earth and various locations in space as Thanos hunts for the stones.
Individually, none of the heroes could possibly stand a chance against Thanos, and the challenge is barely any easier when they work together.
Unlike most other Marvel films, the stakes in Infinity War are immense.
The studio has been telling us for months that some of our favourites are likely to die and that threat is evident as soon as the film starts.
You would think a film with so many characters – the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Wakandans, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange – would buckle under the weight of such a heavy cast, but, amazingly, that’s not the case.
Marvel knows its audience is extremely familiar with each of the characters and so doesn’t waste time setting up who everyone is.
That being said, viewers who have missed a film or two will still be able to keep up as things are explained to character’s who have never met before or who have been out of the action for a few films.
A film as big as Infinity War needs to be watched in a cinema, if only to fully appreciate all the characters.
The action is top-notch and doesn’t let up for a moment.
There are also some serious heartstring-tugging moments and fantastic one-liners.
It’s hard to pick a stand-out among the stellar cast of characters, but Tom Holland as Spider-Man is truly amazing and brings such an earnestness and enthusiasm to the role.
Zoe Saldana also proves her acting chops as Gamora while Chris Hemsworth, as always, is high value as the God of Thunder.
Don’t forget to stick around for the post-credit sequence – it’s mightily important.
Now, bring on Avengers 4 – we can’t wait.
