A LARGE sign has fallen onto cars parked at the Stockland shopping centre at Cleveland.
No one has been injured in the incident.
Flour Mill Bakery shop owners said they heard a scraping sound and then a loud bang.
A light pole had been brought down by the falling sign.
The shop owners said the area was being taped off.
Stockland Cleveland Centre manager Jodie Punshon asked for staff and customers to avoid the area until they had removed remaining debris.
“The safety of our customers is always our main priority and we will be undertaking an investigation into the cause of this incident,” she said.
“We immediately cornered off the affected section of the carpark and are working with the authorities to further secure the site.”
A Woolworths spokesperson said they were working alongside authorities to assist with investigations.
“At Woolworths the safety of our team members and customers is of utmost importance,” the spokesperson said.
Redland City Council sold the 206-lot car park behind Woolworths to developer Stockland earlier this year.
Residents had previously complained the council did not property maintain the car park saying it had pot holes.
A Stockland spokeswoman told the Bulletin in March the company was planning a car park upgrade and had no development plans for the site at that stage.
