FIVE derelict vessels and three illegal pontoon structures will be removed from Tingalpa Creek this week.
Capalaba MP Don Brown said this was the second round of derelict vessel removal in the creek.
Seven sunken vessels have already been removed.
Mr Brown said that with 12 abandoned boats gone it would ensure that Tingalpa Creek could remain a popular destination for water activities.
“Up until now junk boats have been clogging up our beautiful creek and making navigation nearly impossible in some sections,” Mr Brown said.
“This time we were able to remove land based structures as well as the boats, so hopefully they won’t come back.”
Tingalpa Creek has had a problem with abandoned boats for a long time, with local groups like Wynnum Redlands Canoe Club, asking for their removal.
“Now with these eyesores gone we can attract more people to use the creek for canoeing and kayaking”, said Mr Brown. He is also requesting that residents stay vigilant to stop other boats from being abandoned in the area.
“If you see anyone down there making illegal structures please don’t hesitate to contact my office.”
Work to remove the boats is expected to be completed by Friday.
