The Royal Australian Air Force gave Iona College boys a taste of flying on May 23 when its FA-18 Super Hornet flight simulator was brought to the school.
The program provided a hands-on in-flight flying experience to the students who are part of the aerospace studies subject. The activity provided an overview to the students to consider a career in not only air force, but also an officer aviation position such as pilot, air traffic controller and air combat officer.
Head of Technology Practice at Iona College Matt Collyer said two different programs were run throughout the day, providing as many students as possible the opportunity to participate.
“The outreach from the RAAF really serves to outline some career choices that our aerospace studies students may have in front of them. The air force advocates were informative, engaging and passionate about their jobs – overall great role models for our students,” he said.
Year 10 student Travis Maguire said he relished the opportunity to fly missions in a Super Hornet or direct aircraft as part of an ATC role.
“It was a great experience and I would love to do it again. The simulator was first class,” he said.
Iona College has its very own Cessna 210 flight simulator, which provides valuable flying time and experience for its students, and this will be on display at the upcoming Open Day from 1.30pm to 4pm on Monday, June 4. A further six flight simulators will also be available for anyone who is keen to try.
