The Queensland government will spend $14 million upgrading and maintaining the home of the state's ballet company, in a move the deputy premier says will draw more tourists and create jobs.
There's $8 million set aside for construction of a new 350-400 seat theatre at the the heritage-listed Thomas Dixon dance centre, deputy premier Jackie Trad said as she made the announcement alongside arts minister Leeanne Enoch on Saturday.
A further $6 million, from the $35 million arts budget, would be used to maintain the building.
It comes as interest in ballet grows across Queensland, Ms Trad said.
$24 million in donations would also go towards funding the program.
Queensland Ballet Artistic Director Li Cunxin said the money would transform the building into a world-class venue.
"It will nurture the next generation, future generations of artistic talent," he said.
"It will allow us to further engage, expand our reach, with communities."
Independent artist and small to medium companies would also benefit from the upgrades, he said.
It's hoped works would be complete by the end of 2020, which is the 60th anniversary of Queensland Ballet.
Ms Trad expects the upgraded facilities to lure more tourists to the state.
