CAPALABA schools and sporting clubs have access to a huge outdoor movie screen bought with money from the council’s Community Infrastructure Fund for the division.
The 6 metre high and 8 metre wide screen will make its debut at Capalaba Warriors Rugby League Football Club for Sunday’s State of Origin game.
Warriors events co-ordinator Tanya Bonney said the night would raise money for the club, which was a family-friendly venue.
“The canteen will be open and our liquor licence extended to include the field,” she said.
The club relied on fundraising for upgrades and running costs.
“If the club’s not open we don’t make any money so a night like this is great,” Ms Bonney said.
‘It’s an opportunity for the club to get a good crowd and make money.”
Cr Paul Gleeson said he had hoped to install a permanent screen at Capalaba Regional Park to hold community movie nights.
He said the $35,000 mobile screen became an option that could also be used by Capalaba schools and sporting clubs for community events and fundraisers.
“I am looking at doing movie nights at the Capalaba Regional Park as a free community event,” Cr Gleeson said.
“It would get mums and dads, families, out of their houses for the night.
“I never want to charge because I don’t want people to miss out because they can’t afford to go.”
Cr Gleeson said he would get sponsorship to cover costs, such as broadcasting rights, for the movie nights, which would start after winter.
On Sunday the screen will be set up about 4.30pm ahead of State of Origin.
Anyone attending can take bean bags and chairs. There is no BYO.
