REDLANDS MP Kim Richards says she is pushing the state government to give Redlands a fair share of $20 million budgeted for cleaning up sunken vessels.
Ms Richards said the money was for cleaning up creeks and waterways across the state but she would fight for wrecks in Moreton Bay and Redlands waterways to be removed.
“The Palaszczuk government’s announcement of a $20 million state-wide fund to remove sunken vessels is an important first step but I want to see more of it spent locally to remove wrecks in Moreton Bay and Moogarrupam Creek,” Ms Richards said.
“It’s important that Redlands gets its fair share of the fund so local boaties and the community can safely enjoy Moreton Bay and Moogarrupam Creek without these hazardous wrecks.”
Ms Richards said the government should also look at laws to address boat owners abandoning vessels.
“These sunken boat wrecks are costly hazards in our local waterways – particularly for local boaties – and eyesores for the community so it’s important they’re removed.”
Ms Richards said she would push for sunken wrecks to be removed from sites like Russell Island foreshore, Moorgarrupam Creek and Victoria Point Foreshore.
“Local boaties and the community deserve to safely enjoy our waterways and for visitors to our region to experience our pristine environment.”
